The law states that all physical therapists (including physiotherapists, osteopaths, chiropractors, massage therapists etc must have veterinary permission before they can treat your horse under the veterinary act 1966.

(This is usually gained by a simple phone call or E-mail to your vet.)

What is Equine Massage Therapy?

Equine massage is the non-invasive systematic manipulation of the soft tissues of the
body to achieve specific goals, such as relaxation, stimulation plus the resolving of muscle
related problems for example stress points.

Merishia massage uses professional sports massage techniques such as effleurage,
petrissage, tapotment, trigger and stress points release and applies them to the horse's body to help relieve areas of tension.

Also involved in treatment is a range of passive and dynamic stretching to suit the individual horse's needs which will help range of motion, flexibility of joints etc.

Every horse is an individual and must be treated that way and no two massage treatments are the same. A good therapist will address the horse in front of them
and treat accordingly. When massage is applied with skill and knowledge of equine
anatomy and bio-mechanics, as I have as a fully qualified equine massage therapist,
it can have a profound effect on the physical and psychological well being of the
horse.

Massage has become increasingly popular within the horse world as a more holistic
approach to training is being used by trainers and riders, and is playing an important
role in prevention, recovery from injury and forming an integral part of modern training
programmes.
